General Framework for Decoding the Shennong Bencao Jing

The third part returns to the Shennong Bencao Jing. The speaker argues that returning to the source requires a general framework capable of integrating the roughly 360 medicines of the classic together with the enormous later materia-medica tradition. Without such a framework, one is left staring at the brief twenty-odd-character description of each drug without a way to derive its logic.

General framework for decoding the Shennong Bencao Jing
Decoding the *Shennong Bencao Jing* requires more than nature and flavor; color, bodily form, timing, morphology, clarity/turbidity, and pathological rules from the *Inner Canon* must also be included.

The core of this framework is to treat each medicinal substance as a “player” with multiple innate endowments. Nature, flavor, form, bodily structure, color, ascent/descent/floating/sinking, clarity/turbidity, harvest season, functional naming, and the qi of Heaven and Earth it receives are all important dimensions for inferring action. Nature and flavor are merely the most visible entrance, not the sole answer.

We argue that when Shennong selected these medicines, the key was not ordinary biochemical constituents but their capacity to adjust the Three Yin and Three Yang, the five zang and six fu, and human qi transformation. Most people cannot directly sense the pathway of a drug as channel-sensitive individuals might, so they must rely on the naming, nature/flavor, and morphological clues preserved in the classics.
