Scutellaria: Yangming, Taiyin, and the Scope of Heat Clearing
Scutellaria is often abbreviated as a “heat-clearing, dampness-drying” medicine. Through Zhang Zhicong’s interpretation, however, we argue that the scope of its heat clearing must be located more precisely. Scutellaria is understood as a medicine of hand and foot Yangming together with hand Taiyin, allowing it to reach heat manifestations related to the muscles, intestines and stomach, and skin.
Yangming governs the muscles and intestines/stomach; Taiyin is related to the Lung and skin/hair. Scutellaria can clear heat from different layers not because it clears everything, but because its endowment reaches these channels and layers. If one simply says “clear heat” without distinguishing layers, all heat manifestations are easily conflated in clinical practice.
We note that scutellaria can clear heat of the muscles and intestines/stomach, while heat of the skin may already be a branch manifestation. The lesson is that even “heat” differs by layer, channel, and zang-fu source. Whether a medicine corresponds depends on whether its endowment can reach that layer.
