The Yangming-Type Person: Three In, One Out, and Three-Fen Surging-Leaping
The basic formula for the Yangming-type person is:
Three in, one out: this is the Yangming-type person, whose pulse lü are Guxian and Zhonglü. The Yangming pulse oscillates three fen; when exhalation and inhalation complete one breath, the pulse moves five times and qi travels six cun—this is normal.
Like Taiyin, Yangming has five movements in one breath, but one is three-out-one-in and the other three-in-one-out. Like Jueyin, Yangming has three-fen oscillation, but its entry-exit ratio differs again.
The Mirror Classic is performing multidimensional classification
Section titled “The Mirror Classic is performing multidimensional classification”If any single field is considered alone, another type will collide with it:
- five movements: Taiyin also has this;
- three fen: Jueyin also has this;
- six cun: almost every type preserves this scale.
True differentiation comes from the conjunction of several fields: lü + entry-exit ratio + oscillation division + waveform.
Hand and Foot Yangming still have different waveforms
Section titled “Hand and Foot Yangming still have different waveforms”The text says:
In one inhalation the pulse moves three times and in one exhalation once. When the completed breath oscillates and surges-leaps, it is the breath of Foot Yangming; when it oscillates and slides-leaps, it is the breath of Hand Yangming.
Within the same three-fen oscillation, Foot Yangming is characterized more by “surging-leaping,” while Hand Yangming by “slippery-leaping.”
Pulse shape is therefore not an ornamental adjective but part of the classification.
Season is also written into the normal description
Section titled “Season is also written into the normal description”The source says: “In summer it lies at the skin, spreading broadly like the abundance of the myriad things.” Yangming normality is therefore also tied to seasonal background.
This is why the final sentence of the work—“when tone-color and pulse prevail outside their proper time, disease should be expected”—does not appear suddenly. The entire text has been preparing the idea that normal values must include temporal phase.
Only the Taiyang-type person remains.
The Taiyang type will show four-in-one-out, nine-fen oscillation, and six pulse movements in one breath; the source explicitly says that infants, children, and people of urgent temperament may show this as normal.
This brings the principle that one ruler cannot be imposed uniformly on all people to its clearest conclusion.
