Ten-Day Five-Phase Cycle of the Heavenly Stems

The Five-Phase model can not only be expanded to the macroscopic annual scale of 360 days, with each phase governing 72 days; it can also be compressed to a microscopic cycle measured in days. This is the ten-day Five-Phase cycle of the Heavenly Stems. It is a framework in which the ten Heavenly Stem symbols are used to capture finer fluctuations of Five-Phase energy in time.

The ten Heavenly Stems divide the Five-Phase sequence into a ten-day cycle, allowing the phases to be calculated at a finer temporal scale.

The core first-principles idea is the partitioning and encoding of a decimal celestial resonance cycle. The ten Heavenly Stems—Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, and Gui—are grouped in adjacent Yin-Yang pairs to form five sets: Jia-Yi as Wood, Bing-Ding as Fire, Wu-Ji as Earth, Geng-Xin as Metal, and Ren-Gui as Water. Each pair governs two days, completing a Five-Phase microcycle within ten days. This ten-day cycle becomes an indispensable parameter in traditional temporal calculations. One must be careful, however: although Jia and Yi both belong to Wood, their Yin-Yang qualities differ. In the musical theory associated here with ancient Chinese medicine, Jia and Yi represent different high and low frequency states within the same jue tone. The acupuncture method known for centuries as ziwu liuzhu (“midnight-noon ebb and flow”) likewise embeds the order in which points open according to stems and branches within this ten-day cycle.
