Daily Desired-Relief-Time Model of the Three Yin and Three Yang
At the finest temporal scale of the Three Yin and Three Yang, the model contracts into the sequence of double-hours within a 24-hour day. This is the daily desired-relief-time model of the Three Yin and Three Yang. It identifies “golden time windows” during which Six-Channel disorders are described as being most likely to resolve spontaneously, ease, or undergo a marked turning point.
The core first-principles idea is that over the 24 hours of a day, as the Earth rotates, the degree to which qi and blood fill different channels moves in a wave-like tidal pattern. When external time reaches the phase in which a particular channel can resonate most strongly with temporal conditions, that channel receives the greatest positive intervention, and accumulated pathogenic influences are thought to be most easily dispersed. The best-known expression of this model is the “times when the Six-Channel disorders desire resolution” in the Shanghan Lun. The text places the desired relief time of Shaoyin disease in the Zi-Chou-Yin-Mao interval, with a midpoint near Mao, or dawn, and the desired relief time of Yangming disease in Shen-You-Xu, with a midpoint near You, around late afternoon or dusk. The article argues that these correspond closely to local sunrise and sunset in the Luoyang region of Henan, associated here with the area in which Zhongjing wrote. On that basis, the model is interpreted as a physical clock strongly dependent on local solar time, rather than on administratively defined time zones.
