Ascent, Descent, Floating, Sinking, and the Four Seasons
Ascent, descent, floating, and sinking describe the direction in which a medicine’s qi moves and form an important bridge between materia medica and the spacetime model. We simplify their seasonal correspondences as: ascent = spring, floating = summer, descent = autumn, sinking = winter.
These are not abstract labels but interventions in the direction of qi dynamics after a medicine enters the body. Ascent can promote upward movement and generation; floating can reach outward to the exterior; descent can gather and move downward; sinking can enter deeply and store inward. Knowing nature and flavor without knowing ascent/descent is like knowing the wind direction without knowing which layer the wind is moving through.
We note that aromatic medicines tend to be clearer, move toward the exterior, and act quickly. Xiakucao also illustrates the connection between naming and seasonal timing: “withering in summer” carries the implication of Yang reaching its extreme after the summer solstice, turning toward Yin, and receiving the gathering qi of autumn. This also allows timing of medication to resonate with the Four Images of the day and of the year.
