The Treatment Structure of Pathogenic Qi Counter-Victory on Earth

The “Great Treatise on the Utmost Truth” passages on pathogenic qi counter-victory appear to describe how each of the Six Qi should be treated when another pathogenic qi overcomes it in reverse. Formal logical testing, however, yields a more important conclusion: the first therapeutic flavor is not determined by the counter-victorious pathogenic qi alone. It is determined by the resident root qi whose proper position has been counter-overcome.

Treatment-flavor structure of pathogenic qi counter-victory on Earth
When a qi governs on Earth and is counter-overcome by pathogenic qi, the first therapeutic flavor falls on the resident root qi that has been counter-overcome, while thermal nature opposes the pathogenic qi that gained the advantage.

Thus, when “Wind governs on Earth and clear/dry qi counter-victoriously overcomes it,” the qi that has actually gained the advantage is clear/dry Metal, yet the first therapeutic flavor is not calculated from how to overcome that clear pathogen. Instead, it takes the draining flavor of Wind-Wood, the resident root qi, and therefore uses sour-warm. By the same logic, when Heat or Fire governs on Earth and Cold counter-overcomes it, the first flavor is the Fire draining flavor sweet; when Dampness governs on Earth and Heat counter-overcomes it, the first flavor is the Earth draining flavor bitter; and when Cold governs on Earth and Heat counter-overcomes it, the first flavor is the Water draining flavor salty. In the identifiable Earth-governing counter-victory passages, this rule reproduces 5/5; when the Heaven-governing counter-victory passages are included, it reproduces 11/11.

This means that treatment of “pathogenic qi counter-victory” should not be understood as “see the pathogen, then choose a flavor that overcomes it.” Programmatic testing shows that choosing the first flavor solely from the identity of the counter-victorious pathogen hits only 3/6. The reason is that the same Heat pathogen, when counter-overcoming different root qi, can be met in the text by bitter, pungent, or salty as the first flavor. The first flavor is therefore not a simple function of pathogen identity, but is located at the qi-transformation interface where the resident root qi has been counter-overcome.

The most concise formulation is:

Pathogenic qi counter-victory on Earth: resident root qi is counter-overcome → first therapeutic flavor = draining flavor of the resident root qi → thermal nature then counteracts the pathogenic qi that actually gained the advantage

For example, when the Heat or Fire root qi is counter-overcome by Cold, sweet is used first because sweet is the draining flavor of Fire, while a hot thermal nature is used to counter Cold. When the Cold root qi is counter-overcome by Heat, salty is used first because salty is the draining flavor of Water, while a cool/cold thermal nature counters Heat. The first flavor and the thermal property therefore belong to two different layers: flavor addresses imbalance of the root qi; thermal nature addresses the counter-victorious pathogenic qi.

A special case is the line, “When Dryness governs on Earth and Heat counter-victoriously overcomes it, treat with ping and cold.” The word ping here is not one of the five flavors—sour, bitter, sweet, pungent, salty—and therefore cannot be treated as normal first-flavor data. The formal model predicts that the most likely missing first flavor is pungent, because pungent is the draining flavor of Metal and the parallel Sitian passage explicitly says, “When Dryness transforms in Heaven and Heat counter-victoriously overcomes it, treat with pungent and cold.” Textually, however, the original wording ping han must still be preserved as a missing value or possible textual corruption; a model-based reconstruction cannot be passed off as the original wording.

The true value of this “pathogenic qi counter-victory” group therefore lies not in memorizing six flavor prescriptions, but in seeing the structural layers of Inner Canon treatment: counter-victory does not mean merely treating the pathogen; it first stabilizes the resident root qi that has been counter-overcome. The first flavor is the root qi’s draining flavor, while thermal nature counters the counter-victorious pathogen. This comes closer than a line-by-line table to a computable grammar of qi-transformation treatment and illustrates the highly formalizable internal order of the flavor-treatment system in the “Great Treatise on the Utmost Truth.”
