The Treatment Structure of Pathogenic Victory over Sitian
The “Great Treatise on the Utmost Truth” passages on pathogenic victory over Sitian concern what happens when one of the Six Qi has already “transformed in Heaven” and occupies the upper position, but is then counter-overcome by another pathogenic qi. Formal testing yields the central conclusion that pathogenic victory over Sitian and pathogenic counter-victory on Earth share the same first-flavor rule: the first flavor is the draining flavor of the resident root qi that has been counter-overcome, not the flavor that overcomes the counter-victorious pathogen.
Thus, when “Wind transforms in Heaven and clear/dry qi counter-victoriously overcomes it,” clear/dry Metal is the qi that has actually gained the advantage, yet the first therapeutic flavor remains the draining flavor of Wind-Wood, so sour-warm is used. When “Heat transforms in Heaven and Cold counter-overcomes it” or “Fire transforms in Heaven and Cold counter-overcomes it,” the Fire draining flavor sweet is used. When Dampness transforms in Heaven and Heat counter-overcomes it, the Earth draining flavor bitter is used. When Dryness transforms in Heaven and Heat counter-overcomes it, the Metal draining flavor pungent is used. When Cold transforms in Heaven and Heat counter-overcomes it, the Water draining flavor salty is used. This one rule reproduces all six Sitian counter-victory passages, 6/6.
Treatment therefore should not be simplified into a single-line reversal such as “see Cold and use Heat; see Heat and use Cold.” Thermal nature indeed opposes the qi that has actually gained the advantage—for example, when Cold counter-overcomes Heat/Fire, warming or hot properties are used; when Heat counter-overcomes Dampness, Dryness, or Cold, cold or cool properties are used. But the first therapeutic flavor addresses the qi-transformation imbalance created after the resident root qi has been counter-overcome. In other words, flavor treats the root qi; thermal nature treats the pathogenic qi.
These passages also show that the upper, Sitian position does not change the basic algorithm for the first therapeutic flavor. Compared with pathogenic counter-victory on Earth, pathogenic victory over Sitian is not a separate flavor system, but the same “resident root qi draining flavor” rule unfolded at the heavenly position. This explains why all six lines—wind, heat, dampness, fire, dryness, and cold—can be tightly aligned with the standard Five-Phase supplementation-and-drainage flavor table.
For the assisting flavors, one should not focus only on the first listed assistant but preserve the entire assisting-flavor set. For example, “when Heat transforms in Heaven and Cold counter-victoriously overcomes it, assist with bitter, sour, and pungent”: all three belong to one assisting slot responsible for multi-target correction, not a simple second-, third-, and fourth-flavor hierarchy. Formal analysis therefore preserves the assisting flavors as sets because the original text does not explicitly assign sovereign–minister weights within them.
The final structure can be summarized as:
Pathogenic victory over Sitian: root qi transforms in Heaven + pathogenic qi counter-overcomes it → first therapeutic flavor = draining flavor of the resident root qi → thermal nature opposes the pathogenic qi that gained the advantage → assisting-flavor set performs multi-target correction
Its deeper significance is that pathogenic victory over Sitian is not simply treatment of the pathogen, but treatment of the qi-transformation imbalance created after the heavenly root qi has been counter-overcome. The first flavor stabilizes the root qi, thermal nature counters the pathogen, and the assisting-flavor set corrects dispersal/gathering, urgency/relaxation, dryness/dampness, and ascent/descent/inward/outward movement. The treatment system is therefore not merely an empirical lookup table, but a qi-transformation flavor grammar that can be formalized, compressed, and tested.
