Why Must the Same ‘An’ Still Be Distinguished by Left and Right?
Immediately after establishing the ten transformation tones, the Mirror Classic of Bian Que adds an easily overlooked explanation:
That one tone is divided into left and right is because the positions in which the shared degrees combine are different. Left and right are divided in position while the name remains one because the degree of tone and the harmony are not different. In the human body, the positions of the left and right channels differ while the name remains one.
This tells us directly that state code and spatial location are two different dimensions.
The same name does not mean the same position
Section titled “The same name does not mean the same position”Two different channel combinations may both be classified as “An.” If only An is recorded without the left-right position, two different qi-interaction events are collapsed into one.
The Mirror Classic therefore lets “An” encode only the relation of shared degree, while left/right, hand/foot, and channel names encode location separately.
This is close to a sound data-structure principle: one field should not carry every dimension of information.
Why does left-right difference matter so much?
Section titled “Why does left-right difference matter so much?”The body appears bilaterally symmetric, but physiological activity need not be identical on both sides at every moment. From the “Pulse and Breath” sections onward, the text repeatedly discusses flow and infusion above/below, front/back, and left/right. In the Eight She it gives many explicit pairings such as “right Hand Shaoyin concurrently with left Foot Taiyin” and “left Hand Jueyin in parallel with left Foot Shaoyang.”
Left and right are therefore not footnotes. They are part of the qi-interaction network.
The same transformation relation occurring on the left or right can belong to different spatial events; at minimum, the Mirror Classic’s algorithm treats them as distinct.
“Same name” and “same position” must be separated
Section titled ““Same name” and “same position” must be separated”The principle can be written simply:
The same name can occur at different positions.
Different positions do not necessarily mean different qi relations.
Two locations may express the same transformation relation, while two relations with the same name should not be mistaken for the same location.
This is especially important when reading the Eight-She table. When “Sheng, Jian, Bing, He, Zhuan” and different left-right channels appear together, no single term should be isolated from the full combination.
From one dimension to many
Section titled “From one dimension to many”So far we have:
- tonal class;
- ten degrees;
- ten shared-degree relations;
- left-right spatial position.
The Twelve Lü, Shou, She, and Hou will be added later.
That is why the Mirror Classic seems to contain so many symbols: it is not simply adding terminology, but assigning codes to different axes of a multidimensional bodily state.
The next article shows how this combination space rapidly expands to “two hundred and ten tones” and even “two thousand one hundred tones,” and asks why the author wanted such high resolution.
