What Does the Eight-She Table Really Record? How the Twelve Channels Pair Across Hand and Foot
“Eight She III” is one of the densest tables in the entire book.
For example, the first line says:
Qian-Gui, Zhi-An-Huangzhong: right Hand Shaoyin is Jian with left Foot Taiyin.
The second:
Gui-Cang, Zhong-Bian-Linzhong: right Hand Yangming is He with right Foot Shaoyang.
The third:
Cang-Sheng, Zheng-Zhi-Taicu: left Hand Jueyin is Bing with left Foot Shaoyang.
Without the preceding twenty-seven articles, these look like cipher text. But they can now be decomposed layer by layer.
One Eight-She record contains at least six dimensions
Section titled “One Eight-She record contains at least six dimensions”Take “Qian-Gui, Zhi-An-Huangzhong: right Hand Shaoyin is Jian with left Foot Taiyin”:
- Qian-Gui: a Nine-Qi state transition;
- Zhi: one of the ten degrees;
- An: a shared-degree transformation-tone relation;
- Huangzhong: one of the Twelve Lü;
- right Hand Shaoyin / left Foot Taiyin: two specific channel positions;
- Jian: the qi-interaction relation between them.
It is not a mystical sentence but a highly compressed multi-column data record.
Why must the whole record be preserved?
Section titled “Why must the whole record be preserved?”Extracting only Huangzhong loses the state. Extracting only Shaoyin-Taiyin loses lü and degree. Extracting only Jian tells us nothing about which two positions are involved.
The minimum analytical unit of the Eight She should therefore be the entire combination code.
This matters for digitization. The best table does not keep only one tag, nor merely store the whole sentence as an opaque string. It separates fields: Nine-Qi A, Nine-Qi B, degree, transformation tone, lü, hand channel, foot channel, left/right, relational operator.
Pairings are not exclusively contralateral
Section titled “Pairings are not exclusively contralateral”Although the section begins with the example of right hand coordinating with left foot in walking, the actual table contains both contralateral and ipsilateral pairings, yin-yang combinations, and different hand-foot relationships.
Contralateral walking is therefore an entry point for understanding mutual governing-response, not the only pairing rule of the Eight She.
Pairings change with the qi-transformational sequence
Section titled “Pairings change with the qi-transformational sequence”The same channel can form Jian, Sheng, Bing, He, or Zhuan with different channels under different Nine-Qi states, lü, and degrees.
The Eight She are therefore not a fixed “zang-fu pairing table,” but a network that reconnects as state changes.
This is one of the most striking features of the Mirror Classic: bodily functional relations are not represented only by fixed anatomical links, but by relations that vary with qi-transformational state.
The next article examines the most important dynamic distinction in this network: why are the Seventy-Two She called “the establishment of qi,” while the Seventy-Three She are called “the movement of qi”?
