General Theory of the Functional Network of the Five Zang and Six Fu

Within the Inner Canon, the functional network of the Five Zang and Six Fu is built especially from chapters such as the Suwen: Yin Yang Ying Xiang Da Lun, Jin Gui Zhen Yan Lun, Xuan Ming Wu Qi, Wu Zang Sheng Cheng, and the Ling Shu: Ben Shen. Many modern books on the Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon reproduce these correspondences in tabular form.

The clinical value of this extended Five-Phase / Five-Zang network is not merely classificatory. Multimodal observations gathered from the patient can first be sorted into a smaller number of related families. This reduces the number of competing explanations and helps the physician identify the underlying cause and pathomechanism.

The ancient model assumes that phenomena in the world can be grouped into broad classes according to shared patterns—described in the tradition as things that can “respond and communicate with one another.” In this research framework, one way of thinking about that commonality is through recurring modes or frequency-like properties.

Thus the twelve broad categories and twenty-four dimensions below, when crossed with Five-Phase/Five-Zang correspondences, compress what would otherwise be roughly 120 scattered observations into five large families. This supplies a basis for reasoning such as: which family is currently excessively strong, and which other family is being constrained by it?

When a compact hypothesis can account for several otherwise separate observations at once, the physician is working in the same broad logical direction as a detective. In modern analytical language, this can be compared with backward reasoning: begin with the observed consequences and infer the most coherent common cause.

Dimension 1 | Direction–climate axis: spatial direction (East / South / West / North / Center) and seasonal-climatic qi (Wind / Heat / Dryness / Cold / Dampness).

Dimension 2 | Qi-transformation generation axis: the natural generative sequence in which qi gives rise to flavor and flavor gives rise to the zang.

Dimension 3 | Zhouyi trigram axis (in the trigram): correspondence between zang-fu and the Eight Trigrams.

Dimension 4 | Heaven–Earth generative-number axis (its number): the generative and completion numbers of the Hetu.

Dimension 5 | Twelve-official functional axis (official role): the social-office metaphor used to describe the chief responsibilities of the zang-fu within the living system.

Dimension 6 | Spirit–Hun–Po–Intention–Will axis (what is stored): the spiritual or psychophysiological aspect stored or governed by each zang-fu.

Dimension 7 | Emotional-response axis (in the emotion): the emotional tendencies associated with the zang-fu.

Dimension 8 | Cognitive ladder axis: a sequence from perception and memory through thought, deliberation, and wisdom.

Dimension 9 | Tissue-system affiliation axis (what belongs): the zang-fu affiliations of basic bodily substances and tissues such as Blood, vessels, sinews, flesh, qi, and bone.

Dimension 10 | Body-tissue component axis (in the body): the principal physical structures governed by each zang-fu.

Dimension 11 | External luster axis (its manifestation): observable signs of flourishing or decline at the body surface.

Dimension 12 | External-orifice axis (opens into): the sensory orifices through which zang-fu function is expressed at the surface.

Dimension 13 | Fluid secretion and transformation axis (its fluid): physiological secretions and moistening fluids generated through zang-fu qi-transformation.

Dimension 14 | Five-tone frequency axis (in sound): the patterned resonances of Jue, Zhi, Gong, Shang, and Yu.

Dimension 15 | Vocal-expression axis (in the voice): characteristic vocal modes such as shouting, laughing, singing, crying, and groaning.

Dimension 16 | Visible-color axis (in color): green-blue, red, yellow, white, and black as visible surface correspondences.

Dimension 17 | Odor-differentiation axis (its odor): rancid, scorched, fragrant, fishy, and putrid odor qualities.

Dimension 18 | Flavor axis (in flavor): sour, bitter, sweet, pungent, and salty.

Dimension 19 | Five grains and five vegetables axis: Five-Phase affiliations of staple grains and vegetables.

Dimension 20 | Five fruits and five domestic animals axis: food-therapy affiliations of fruits and animal foods.

Dimension 21 | Five-creature ecological axis (its creature): broad natural classes such as furred, feathered, naked-skinned, shelled, and scaled creatures.

Dimension 22 | Interior–exterior zang-fu linkage axis (paired relation): network connection between Yin zang and Yang fu.

Dimension 23 | Five-Phase generating–controlling axis (what it governs): the constraining and affiliative relationships among zang-fu.

Dimension 24 | Disease-involvement and aversion axis (change / aversion / injury / disease): abnormal movement patterns, susceptibility to causes, aversion to external influences, and spatially radiating pain or involvement patterns.
