Opening, Closing, and Pivoting of the Six Channels: A Key to Pattern Examination

Opening, Closing, and Pivot transform the six channels from “six names” into six dynamic functions. Opening governs outward movement and distribution; Closing governs inward movement and reception; Pivot governs switching between inside and outside.

Among the Three Yang, Taiyang is Opening, Yangming is Closing, and Shaoyang is Pivot. Among the Three Yin, Taiyin is Opening, Jueyin is Closing, and Shaoyin is Pivot. Taiyang moves upward and outward to the skin and body hair; Yangming moves inward and downward; Shaoyang governs movement between interior and exterior. Taiyin distributes Qi, Blood, and fluids; Jueyin stores Yin-Blood of the upper and lower burners; Shaoyin performs the pivoting transformation within the Yin channels.

The key to Opening–Closing–Pivot is therefore not static anatomy but determining whether the qi dynamic is stuck because it cannot open outward, cannot close inward, or cannot pivot smoothly.

Without a concrete image, Opening–Closing–Pivot can be difficult to visualize. The overlapping geometry often called the “Flower of Life” together with a double-torus field can, in geometry, be generated from only a small number of simple construction rules. In this project it is used as a visualization for a three-dimensional, dynamic Yin–Yang/Taiji form—not as proof that the classical channels are literally identical to a modern physical torus model.

Flower of Life and double-torus schematic

Six-channel functionVisual mapping used in the Flower-of-Life model
Taiyang — Openingoutermost spherical surface; centrifugal dispersion
Yangming — Closinginward funnel; centripetal descent
Shaoyang — Pivotcentral waist/throat; S-curve turning point
Taiyin — Openingwhite “fish-eye” radiating outward
Jueyin — Closingblack “fish-eye” / deepest singular region
Shaoyin — Pivotvertical central Water–Fire axis

With this geometric comparison in mind, the following four classical lines become easier to visualize:

The Emperor asked: “What is Yangming?” Qibo replied: “It is the brightness formed by the joining of two Yang.”
The Emperor asked: “What is Jueyin?” Qibo replied: “It is where the two Yin meet and reach their end.”

Looking further into the number and variety of classical formula transformations in the Guilin ancient text and in Shang Han Qian Fa, the number of variations also appears to follow a rough proportion of Opening > Closing > Pivot. In this research program, that pattern is treated as an observation worth testing rather than as a conclusion from geometry alone.

Original Passage from Exploring the Sources of Medicine

Section titled “Original Passage from Exploring the Sources of Medicine”

“Opening and Closing are like the leaves of a door; the Pivot is the hinge on which the door turns. Without the Pivot there can be no Opening or Closing; without Opening and Closing the Pivot has nothing to turn. Thus the three cannot be separated. Opening governs outward movement; Closing governs inward movement; Pivot governs the space between inside and outside. Taiyang Bladder qi-transformation rises and reaches outward to fill the skin and body hair, guarding the exterior and securing it; therefore Taiyang governs Opening. … The Yangming Stomach channel governs receiving food and drink … its qi-transformation moves inward and downward; therefore Yangming governs Closing. … Shaoyang Sanjiao governs the diaphragm and membranes internally and the interstices externally; qi moving between inside and outside travels through these interstices. … The qi of the Three Yang opens and closes between the inside and outside of the body; the qi of the Three Yin opens and closes through the internal front/back and upper/lower regions. … The circulation of Blood and the distribution of fluids are all governed by Taiyin; therefore Taiyin is Opening. … Jueyin is Closing because the Foot Jueyin Liver channel stores Yin qi of the Lower Burner … while the Hand Jueyin Pericardial channel stores Yin qi of the Upper Burner. … Shaoyin is Pivot because the Hand Shaoyin Heart channel internally joins the Pericardium and below generates Spleen-Earth … while the Foot Shaoyin Kidney channel above assists Lung-Metal and below generates Liver-Wood. … These principles are major keys to examining patterns and applying treatment and must be studied carefully.”
