Luoshu Single-Stroke Model of Five-Phase Restraint
In the dynamic interaction of the Five Phases, generation and restraint are often drawn together in popular diagrams. Because restraint has a decisive role in patterns of disease transmission and systemic regulation, it deserves to be extracted and examined separately. This yields the Luoshu single-stroke model of Five-Phase restraint, a mathematical model that links the numerical structure of the Luoshu with the spatial order of mutual restraint. The Five-Phase restraint sequence—Water restrains Fire, Fire restrains Metal, Metal restrains Wood, Wood restrains Earth, and Earth restrains Water—is interpreted as a negative-feedback mechanism that maintains ecological balance in the system. Remarkably, the geometric trajectory of this restraint chain can be encoded within the ancient Chinese Luoshu nine-palace grid. If the Five-Phase “generating numbers” and “completion numbers” are marked with their corresponding phase colors and placed into the Luoshu grid, one can trace a single-stroke drawing. Starting from Water in the north (1, 6), the next stop is Fire, which Water restrains—Fire in the upper-right/southern position (2, 7). Next comes Metal, restrained by Fire—Metal in the west (4, 9). Then comes Wood, restrained by Metal—Wood in the east (3, 8). After that is Earth, restrained by Wood—Earth in the center (5, 10)—before the path returns to northern Water.
