Proportional Pattern Differentiation and Functional Layers within a Formula
Proportional pattern differentiation concerns not only the weight of each medicinal substance but the relative ratios among different directions of action within a formula. We point to formulas such as Cinnamon Twig Two and Yuebi One Decoction, Ephedra and Cinnamon Twig Half-and-Half Decoction, and Minor Construct the Middle Decoction as demonstrations of proportional control.
The core principle is that a formula is not the sum of medicines; it is a synthesis of multiple qi-transformation vectors. Cinnamon Twig Decoction leans toward releasing the muscle layer and harmonizing nutritive and defensive qi, while Yuebi Decoction leans toward effusing Spleen qi. When the ancients designed “two parts Cinnamon Twig, one part Yuebi,” they were adjusting the proportions of inner/outer layers and qi-transformational action.
Minor Construct the Middle Decoction is another clear example. It uses Cinnamon Twig Decoction as its basis and adds extremely sweet maltose, shifting the overall target more strongly toward Taiyin, the Spleen, and the middle burner. Although most ingredients overlap with Cinnamon Twig Decoction, the proportion and added dominant flavor change the direction of the entire formula.
