Atractylodes: Supplementing Spleen-Earth and Layering Root and Branch

Atractylodes is familiar as a medicine that supplements the Spleen, but we demonstrate that simply saying it supplements the middle burner and dries dampness with bitterness does not yet fully capture the relationship of root and branch in the Shennong Bencao Jing and Inner Canon rules.

Causal graph of atractylodes supplementing Spleen-Earth
The indications of atractylodes can be connected back to Spleen-Earth through rules such as sweet supplementing the Spleen, the Spleen governing the limbs, Earth overcoming dampness, and muscular qi communicating outward with the skin.

The fundamental endowment of atractylodes can be placed under supplementing Spleen-Earth. The Spleen governs muscles and the four limbs; Earth integrates the middle burner and transformation/transportation. Once Spleen-Earth is supplemented, many surface effects can be connected: wind-cold-damp impediment, spasm, sweating, limb problems, and outward communication of qi from muscle to skin can all be explained through the Spleen-Earth and muscular layers.

The causal graph shows that without Inner Canon rules such as “the Spleen governs the four limbs,” “the qi of the muscles communicates outward with the skin,” and “the Liver supplements the Spleen,” the many indications of atractylodes remain scattered as a list of effects. The white rule nodes pull the green original-text indications back toward a shared root.
