The Six Channels Are Not Six Lines: Warp and Weft, Pivot and Sustaining, and the Four Dimensions
If the Six Channels are drawn only as six separate channel lines, it becomes difficult to understand the following passage in the Mirror Classic of Bian Que:
When the qi of Taiyin and Taiyang is harmonious, it carries out the transformation of warp and weft; when the qi of Shaoyin and Shaoyang is harmonious, it carries out the transformation of pivot and sustaining; when the qi of Jueyin and Yangming is harmonious, it carries out the transformation of the four dimensions.
The Six Channels here are clearly not merely six labels. They form three pairs with different spatial functions.
Taiyin and Taiyang: warp and weft
Section titled “Taiyin and Taiyang: warp and weft”“Warp and weft” is originally the language of longitudinal and transverse structure.
By placing Taiyin and Taiyang together, the Mirror Classic suggests that the pair forms a basic crossed framework through which other transformations can proceed.
We should not fill this in with a fixed modern anatomical axis on our own. What can be said from the text is that Taiyin and Taiyang are not two unrelated lines; they are a pair whose harmony is required to form a structure.
Shaoyin and Shaoyang: pivot and sustaining
Section titled “Shaoyin and Shaoyang: pivot and sustaining”A pivot is an axis or hinge; sustaining is maintenance.
The text immediately continues:
The pivot allows the qi of warp and weft to be sustained, the measure of the four dimensions to proceed, and the numbers of the Jade Mechanism to harmonize. The transformation of the pivot mechanism must not be violated.
Shaoyin-Shaoyang therefore carries not only spatial significance but the function of turning and sustaining movement.
Jueyin and Yangming: the four dimensions
Section titled “Jueyin and Yangming: the four dimensions”“The four dimensions” expand space beyond one vertical or left-right axis into a surrounding framework.
The three pairs can therefore first be simplified as:
- Taiyin / Taiyang: establish warp and weft;
- Shaoyin / Shaoyang: provide pivoting and sustaining;
- Jueyin / Yangming: unfold the four dimensions.
This is a functional geometry, not necessarily a modern three-dimensional coordinate system.
“Harmony of qi” is a prerequisite for the structure to function
Section titled ““Harmony of qi” is a prerequisite for the structure to function”Each pair is described with the phrase “when the qi is harmonious.”
Later, the Mirror Classic repeatedly discusses Zhuan, Sheng, Jian, Bing, Tong, and He—relations of dominance, superiority, concurrency, parallelism, connection, and harmony. If two channels lose an appropriate relation, the problem may not simply be that one channel “is diseased,” but that the coordination of the pivot, warp-weft, or four-dimensional framework has failed.
This prepares the reader for the many cross-channel pairings of the Eight She, where disease can be expressed as relations between different hand and foot channels rather than as a problem in only one channel.
The next article shows how the Twelve Lü expand into the Seventy-Two She, turning this Six-Channel geometry into a space in which qi-transformational states can be placed.
