How Do the Twelve Lü Become the Seventy-Two She?

After pairing the Twelve Lü with the Six Channels, the Mirror Classic of Bian Que does not add more channel names. Instead it says:

Qi manifestations transform into lü as ascent, descent, entry, and exit. Through the odd-even Twelve Lü, the qi of the Seventy-Two She proceeds. The Seventy-Two She are the entry and exit of constant qi as transformation changes.

Here the Twelve Lü are formally connected to the “Seventy-Two She.”

The text summarizes the Twelve Lü as “ascent, descent, entry, and exit.”

Their medical function is therefore not simply to label a channel but to describe the regulated measure of qi in motion. When the Twelve Lü combine with other qi-transformational dimensions, this movement can be placed in different She.

She should first be understood as a state-position at which qi transformation and qi interaction come to reside, not as a simple synonym for an acupoint.

The text supplies its own generating logic through the “odd-even Twelve Lü” and later connects the Seventy-Two She to the Sixty Shou, Nine Qi, Hou, and other structures.

At this stage there is no need to force seventy-two into one unique multiplication formula. The more important point is the hierarchy:

the Twelve Lü are a coarser scale of movement; the Seventy-Two She form a finer space of qi-transformational positions.

The author later says, “The Sixty Shou are the beginning of the divisions of She.” The Sixty Shou are therefore the point of entry into the finer She structure.

She can mean a lodging or a place of temporary residence.

The Mirror Classic has already said that “where qi resides is where Ying and Wei lodge,” and that She are associated with meetings of streams and valleys. Qi is not permanently fixed there; during flow and infusion it temporarily forms an interaction state at a junction.

She therefore carries both location and temporary state occupancy.

The Seventy-Two She provide a container for “shallowness and depth of disease location”

Section titled “The Seventy-Two She provide a container for “shallowness and depth of disease location””

If the Sixty Shou are to measure disease depth, there must be a space in which “disease location” can be represented. The Seventy-Two She supply such a space.

For now the roles can be separated as:

  • the ten transformation tones describe the relation of qi;
  • the Twelve Lü describe how qi moves;
  • the Sixty Shou combine the two into a starting code;
  • the Seventy-Two She describe where that qi-transformational state resides in the interaction network.

The next article adds direction: the Sixty Shou are not a static table but have both forward and reverse sequences.
